Space Project
Research in Partnership with
Why Not Theatre
As real estate becomes increasingly expensive, cultural spaces become harder to acquire and operate. With Space Project, we worked with Why Not Theatre with the aim to reduce barriers and provide greater access to spaces for artists who need it most. By connecting artists to property managers and community leaders, this project seeks to find a sustainable method of offering affordable space to artists.
Why Not Theatre and Mass Culture, along with Project Partners across Canada – Aluna Theatre, ArtsBuild Ontario, Capsules Artist Resources Inc., Common Ground Arts Society, On Cue Performance Hub, Inc., SURmUN, and Terrarium Studio – explore the impact of providing free temporary and meanwhile-use spaces for artists.
As part of this research journey, Mass Culture is sharing the project’s final report, alongside a short video highlighting key insights, a transferable learning framework, and a blog article by co-researcher Mary Anderson reflecting on her experience working on the project.
If you have any questions about these tools and resources, you can set up a meeting with us below.
This is a short video to share insights from the study co-led by Why Not Theatre and Mass Culture that asks: if you take away the struggle to afford space, does it change what’s possible for artists?
