Arts organizations often collect rich data, but without a consistent structure, it’s hard to use. Data Summer School is here to help.

This two-part workshop series (Data 101 & Data 102) is designed to guide arts organizations from messy spreadsheets to confident data storytelling. You’ll learn how to:

  • Structure your data with consistency and clarity
  • Plan for dashboards and future CRM adoption
  • Define key indicators that matter to your mission
  • Build low-cost, sustainable tools to track and communicate your impact

Whether you’re just starting or ready to visualize, there’s a session for you. Taught by Maia Pelletier, Data Scientist at Purpose Analytics, this summer school blends teaching, hands-on exercises, templates, and office hours to support your data journey.

Data 101 will focus on data storage, integrity, and introductory CRM evaluation.

Data 101: $200 + HST per organization (up to 3 staff members and/or volunteers can attend)

What You'll Learn in Data 101

  • How to define key indicators that matter to your mission
  • How to build low-cost, sustainable tools to track and communicate your impact 

Data 101 is for arts and culture organizations who: 

  • Are keeping data in spreadsheets/in folders/OneDrive/Google Drive, with no central repository
  • Have outgrown their current data practices and want to start to think about next steps,
  • Are considering switching/making changes to data collection/storage/processes and want to deepen their understanding to guide that change,
  • Are interested in understanding their data better, having more effective conversations about data, and in using their data more effectively

Data 102 is for arts and culture organizations who:

  • Are 101 “graduates”
  • Are doing semi-regular reporting and looking to improve the reporting and/or do more of it
  • Already have CRMs and/or data collection and storage, but feel that they don’t know how to “use” it, the information is untapped
  • Think they have a use-case for a dashboard but don’t know where to start

Maia Pelletier

Maia is a Data Scientist at Purpose Analytics, where she enjoys putting her knowledge and passion for data visualization and information design to work on projects like Mass Culture's Data Narratives for the Arts Dashboards. They previously worked as a data analyst and data visualization developer at Statistics Canada, where they worked on dashboard and data visualization development, and automation and modernization solutions. They hold a B.Sc. in Statistics from the University of Ottawa and are passionate about telling stories with data enhanced by data visualization and design.
